Job Summary

 

The Outdoor Program Specialist is responsible for providing mentorship, support, training, development, implementation, support, and evaluation of high-quality programs within the pillars of the Girl Scout Focus (STEAM, Civic Engagement, Outdoors, Entrepreneurship) that meet the needs and interests of girls. Through creating unique adventures and experiences, locally and out-of-state, for girl members to build their courage, confidence, and character in the outdoors. Enhances member outdoor and adventure program experience opportunities by developing and fostering relationships with community partners and organizations.  They’ll lead program staff, and volunteers; communicates and promote outdoor experiences participation on and off council owned properties. They’ll lead program design, development, delivery & evaluation. Employee must reside within the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area and attend regular in person meetings.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage the planning, design, and implementation of progressive and bold experiences in outdoor program areas: Aquatics, Camping, Excursions, Equestrian, Sports and STEM on and off council properties.
  • Management of outdoor programs on and off site including, day/weekend excursions, outdoor activities, Journeys, Badge days and enhancing troops’ outdoor experiences.
  • Works cross-collaboratively with other organizational teams to seek out community partners and organizations to foster relationships that help enhance opportunities for members experiences in adventure and the outdoors.
  • Supervises a team of volunteers and/or staff for program and experience delivery as needed; leads and coaches volunteers and staff in a manner consistent with Girl Scout vision resulting in excellent participant satisfaction.
  • Make decisions and judgements related to overall program delivery and safety in the best interest of the member participants.
  • Ability to directly lead program and strategy initiatives as directed or needed; and support other members of the Program Operations team to achieve departmental and organizational goals. Including but not limited to participation in, on and off camp property programming, excursions and overnight campouts.
  • Create and maintain set standard operating procedures for program offerings, evaluate and update on routine basis.
  • Focuses on inclusive and universal design to embrace diverse volunteers and girls.
  • Encourages others to participate as active team members in an effort to support the work of Girl Scouts.
  • Ensure all programs meet Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints required by Girls Scouts of the USA.
  • Work with Director, to develop routine program, staff/volunteer and partner evaluations process and delivery.
  • Assist whole Outdoor Program Experiences team as needed to reach annual goals.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Principles and practices of volunteer recruitment, management, training, and supervision.
  • Principles and practices of recreational programming or the equivalent.
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Multi-tasking/managing multiple projects.
  • Providing excellent customer service and problem solving
  • Organizing work, setting priorities, attending to details, meeting critical deadlines, and following up with a minimum of direction
  • Computer skills including proficiency in the most current versions of Windows and Office (Word and Excel), Salesforce and ability to use the Internet.
  • To align behavior with the needs, priorities, and goals of the organization
  • To deliver programming to girls in grades K – 12 and fulfill expectations of the Girl Scout Leadership program.
  • To encourage and foster contributions and talents of diverse groups.
  • To ensure Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults by delivering the Girl Scouts message of pluralism and diversity to members of the council.
  • To work collaboratively as a member of a team and with cross-functional teams          
  • To work flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as required by position.  

Abilities:

  • Ability to apply theories of youth development in developing programming options.
  • Ability to align behavior with the needs, priorities, and goals of the organization.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional periodicals and journals.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and work independently.
  • Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to travel and lead transportation of members for off-site travel as part of programs (including comfort with driving 12 & 15 passenger vans)
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of girls and adults.
  • Ability to plan, develop, organize, and carry out daily and specialized programs.

Education and Experience: 

  • Associate’s degree or technical certification required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred or any combination of education, training, and experience relevant to the position.
  • Two to four years of progressively responsible related experience, such as leading teams and youth program management.
  • Experience organizing programs and events for children.
  • Experience with preparing clear and concise reports, record keeping and other written materials for supervisor, colleagues, school staff, girl participants and parents.
  • Valid Driver License with acceptable driving record and proof of current insurance coverage.
  • Employment is dependent upon the results of a criminal background investigation.
  • Bilingual – a plus, but not required.

 Working Conditions:

 

Work is performed in primarily outdoor weather conditions, dirt and dust, and extreme heat or cold. As well as some work performed at home or in office environments.
