Overview

Great Plains SPCA is searching for a Foster Coordinator for the Merriam, Kansas location. Great Plains one of the largest shelters in the Kansas City metro area. We provided quality shelter care for over 4,000 animals yearly. We provide daily care, medical care, and enrichment for our shelter animals. We provide foster and forever home placements, pet behavior training services, and HERO Community Outreach.

 

The Foster Coordinator supports the Foster program at Great Plains SPCA by performing administrative and animal care tasks related to finding foster homes for shelter pets and providing support to foster families.

 

Work Schedule (schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required): Tuesday through Saturday. On call support as needed.

Responsibilities

  • In partnership with Manager, maintain correspondence and communication between volunteers and fosters, other organizations, and the public interested in the volunteer and foster program.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the shelter to ensure the success of the Foster program.
  • Is an administrator on the Foster Facebook group.
  • Manage Foster email inboxes and calendar.
  • Monitor health of foster animals and rapidly report issues to Veterinary Staff/Manager.
  • Assist with cleaning of and care of animals as needed.
  • Communicate with and support Adoptions department so that they are fully knowledgeable about animals in foster and can promote them with adopters that are a good match.
  • Make follow up calls to foster homes in collaboration with Behavior team.
  • Schedule appointments for fosters in partnership with Shelter Medicine.
  • Ensure all supplies are stocked and readily available to foster families.
  • Use Pet Point to keep accurate animal inventory, write animal behavior and other memos, submit medical exam requests, place holds on animals.
  • Proactively communicate among the Foster/Volunteer team all current happenings in the department and provide coverage to other coordinators.
  • Assist in the coordination of special events.

  • Maintain excellent knowledge of and communicate all standard shelter operation procedures all medical related information such as, but not limited to, vaccines, preventatives, wellness, etc. to fosters and volunteers.
  • Maintain excellent knowledge of and communicate to volunteers and fosters all behavior and training methods recommended by Great Plains SPCA Behavior team.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with co-workers, management, volunteers, fosters and members of the public at all times.
  • Provide timely response to others via phone, email or in-person.
  • Meet deadlines, coordinate projects, prioritize tasks and manage time wisely.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to administer vaccines and provide basic medical care and triage.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Lift 50lbs to waist height
  • Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 100lbs.
  • Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, stooping, carrying, and reaching as well as time sitting sedentary at a desk and computer.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, and high noise levels.
  • Work schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required.
  • On call support as needed.
