The Health Forward Foundation mission is to achieve health equity and secure a fair and just region through leadership, advocacy, and resources. Health Forward’s service area encompasses Kansas City, Missouri, and Jackson, Cass, and Lafayette counties in Missouri, and Johnson, Wyandotte, and Allen counties in Kansas.

 

Health Forward was created in 2003 with an original endowment of $440 million from the sale of Health Midwest, a nonprofit hospital system, to Hospital Corporation of America, a for-profit hospital management company. The foundation is governed by a 20-member board of directors and is managed by a professional staff of 26 employees. As of September 2021, the approximate net market value of the foundation’s investment portfolio was $919 million. With nearly two decades of history, Health Forward has invested more than $332 million to improve health throughout its service area.

 

Through leadership, advocacy, and resources Health Forward:

  • Partners with organizations that are working in our core areas of safety net (physical and oral health), mental health, and healthy communities with current emphasis on healthy eating, active living, and the social influencers of health
  • Serves as an advocate on issues that impact people experiencing significant health injustices
  • Supports and builds strategic multi-level partnerships
  • Convenes and connects diverse community stakeholders
  • Amplifies health issues and health inequities that must be addressed to build an equitable culture
    of health

HEALTH FORWARD’S POLICY WORK

Health Forward is in the process of Integrating our policy and programmatic work to more effectively change systems to eliminate racism and reduce economic and health injustices experienced by our communities of focus, including but not limited to Black, brown, and rural communities. We employ an asset-based approach and use language that respects and affirms the many contributions our communities of focus make to our larger community. We engage in year-round advocacy in our local service area, at the state level in Kansas and Missouri, and nationally with our federal delegation. We develop and implement our policy agenda with the input of our communities of focus, grantees, and partners. We also conduct policy-relevant research; work with communities to identify specific policy recommendations; building and participate in coalitions; write policy papers and articles; and lobby policymakers.

 

IMPACT PARTNER - POLICY

Health Forward is currently looking for an Impact Partner - Policy to work closely with Health Forward’s Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives and frequently collaborate with other members of the Health Forward team. The position will require a high performer with asset-based writing, communication, analytical, and advocacy skills. This person should possess a high degree of initiative, a commitment to health equity, the ability to work across multiple cross-functional teams, partners, constituencies, cultures, and communities. A willingness to adapt as Health Forward’s policy and advocacy work evolves will be essential.

Responsibilities

Strategy development and execution

  • Stay current on emerging health, race equity, and economic opportunity policy issues
  • Assist in the development and execution of an annual plan to advance components of Health Forward’s policy and advocacy work
  • Assist with the drafting and reporting of policy and advocacy strategic plans as well as updates to Health Forward’s board and Community Advisory Committee
  • Assist with contract management
  • Draft Health Forward’s legislative updates

Advocacy

  • Support the director of policy and strategic initiatives in:
    • Communicating directly with state, local, and federal lawmakers to share Health Forward’s views on specific bills under consideration. This includes writing and/or delivering testimony to lawmakers in meetings or hearings
    • Managing relationships with local, state, and federal lawmakers, including attending one-on-one meetings, preparing materials, and following up
  • Track legislation and provide timely updates on the local, state, and federal level related to Health Forward’s policy agenda
  • Track lobbying activity and ensure actions are accurately reported
  • Assist in managing relationships with our government affairs consultants
  • Organize public roundtables and convenings related to Health Forward’s policy agenda
  • Organize and participate in coalitions to advance our policy priorities
  • Work with communications associate to create policy-related podcast content, including securing and preparing guests and arranging other details
  • Offer public presentations on Health Forward’s policy priorities, as appropriate

Resource allocations and partner support

  • Participate in Health Forward’s grantmaking process, including the solicitation, assessment, design, review, financial analysis, risk management, and evaluation of grants, as well as maintain a portfolio of policy-related grants
  • Manage advocacy-related trainings, convenings, and technical assistance for Health Forward and partners
  • Maintain working relationships with grantees, partners, and communities to foster relationship, capacity, and field building, including but not limited to attending and participating in external grantee, partner, and community events

Internal relationships

  • Assist with identifying learning opportunities for Health Forward staff related to policy and advocacy
  • Provide timely and accurate information about Health Forward’s policy activities

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in public policy, public health, public administration or a related field or equivalent experience as well as two to five years of professional experience in a related field
  • Experience working with state and/or local government preferred
  • Experience with grantmaking and/or philanthropy preferred, including knowledge of the applicability of various grantmaking philosophies
  • Experience with Social Impact Investing preferred
  • Experience working with community groups preferred
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing and editing skills
  • Strong field building skills
  • Strong advocacy skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well on cross-functional internal and external teams
  • Experience managing projects from inception to completion with attentiveness to timeline, process, budget, and assigning responsibilities across multiple parties
  • Experience with Salesforce preferred

Compensation

A competitive compensation package, corresponding to the experience level, credentials and personal characteristics of the candidate will be offered.
