Great Plains SPCA is searching for an Animal Care and Adoptions Advocate for the Merriam, Kansas location. Great Plains one of the largest shelters in the Kansas City metro area. We provided quality shelter care for over 4,000 animals yearly. We provide daily care, medical care, and enrichment for our shelter animals. We provide foster and forever home placements, pet behavior training services, and HERO Community Outreach.


The Animal Care and Adoptions Advocate is a full-time or part-time, non-exempt position that will provide our animals compassionate, consistent, and professional care from arrival to time of adoption while matchmaking animals with adoptive families. The successful candidate will have a high drive for results, proactive communication skills, follow through and ability to work in a fast paced ever changing environment. An ideal candidate will also be bilingual in both Spanish and English. This position requires weekend and holiday availability.


  • Cultivate positive relationships with customers, volunteers, and co-workers through professional, courteous, and educational interactions.
  • Provide a compassionate and humane environment by demonstrating empathy and professionalism.
  • Provide animals with appropriate housing, food, water, bedding, toys, enrichment, and cleanliness
  • Monitor physical and behavioral health of animals identifying any issues and report to veterinary staff or supervisor.
  • Must be able to speak to the animal's medical needs at time of adoption.
  • Use shelter database, signage, and employee communication systems to keep accurate animal inventory and records.
  • Utilize media, in-person, and word-of-mouth avenues to positively promote adoptable animals.
  • Display strong organizational skills and follow through on job assignments.
  • Possess knowledge of animal behavior and training to provide options to customers and assist staff/volunteers.


This position requires nontraditional hours including weekends and some holidays.


Physical Requirements

  • Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Lift 50 lbs. to waist height
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, stooping, carrying, and reaching


  • High school diploma or GED
  • Key competencies: Integrity, Flexibility, Problem Solving, Accountability and Customer focus
  • Knowledge and work-related experience with animals
  • Competent with computer functions and programs such as Internet and web-based programs, Microsoft Office, Excel, point of sale systems and shelter software database.
  • Prefer veterinary medicine experience/knowledge.
  • Retail experience; sales, pricing, merchandising, KPI tracking, and maintaining accurate inventory.
  • Customer service experience and focus
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish/English)
