Great Plains SPCA is searching for a Marketing and Events Coordinator for the Merriam, Kansas location. Great Plains one of the largest shelters in the Kansas City metro area. We provided quality shelter care for over 4,000 animals yearly. We provide daily care, medical care, and enrichment for our shelter animals. We provide foster and forever home placements, pet behavior training services, and HERO Community Outreach.


The Marketing and Events Coordinator will create content and stories for Great Plains SPCA’s marketing and social media channels while supporting our events team in executing and running events onsite and offsite. This role works collaboratively across the organization to appropriately address the marketing needs and articulate a cohesive and compelling message across selected channels.


Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday 8:30am – 5:30pm


  • Manage, direct and grow our social media engagement.
  • Support the Senior Events Manager with vendors, exhibitors, and stakeholders in event planning.
  • Work closely with operations, events and development teams to define online and print marketing materials and programs.
  • Attend Great Plains SPCA events as primary point of contact, event coordinator and volunteer supervisor.
  • Work independently to track and follow through on tasks to support overall event setup, logistics and execution
  • Ensure all marketing campaigns are delivered on time and within budget as well as meet the target objectives.
  • Create copy for social media, animal website profiles, email campaigns and promotional print materials for Great Plains SPCA’s services, programs and upcoming events.
  • Ensures timely updates to Great Plains SPCA’s social media pages in conjunction with marketing campaigns, program schedules, events, breaking stories; the content must be current, relevant, and intriguing to the audience.
  • Takes quality photos of shelter pets for use on social media, website and print materials, adhering to Great Plains SPCA’s photo style guide.
  • Effectively manage a work schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure the success of Great Plains SPCA’s marketing strategy, events, and brand awareness campaign.
  • Work proactively and collaboratively with other department managers to anticipate and solve problems creatively.


  • Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday 8:30am – 5:30pm. Work schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Meet deadlines, coordinate projects, prioritize tasks and manage time wisely
  • Assist in the coordination of special events
  • Regularly and proactively communicate with Volunteer and Foster Manager, discussing any challenges, ideas or suggestions for department or organization as a whole
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • On call support as needed

Educational and Physical Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, public relations or related field preferred
  • Well-organized with excellent communication and attention to detail skills
  • Experience in animal welfare a plus
  • Highly skilled in managing content across multiple social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
  • 1-2 years of professional marketing success with a focus on creative copywriting and extensive experience in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Knowledge of WordPress is preferred for website management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to work with and lift animals up to 50lbs
