Great Plains SPCA is searching for a Volunteer and Foster Coordinator for the Merriam, Kansas location. Great Plains one of the largest shelters in the Kansas City metro area. We provided quality shelter care for over 6,000 animals yearly. We provide daily care, medical care, and enrichment for our shelter animals. We provide foster and forever home placements, pet behavior training services, and HERO Community Outreach.


The Volunteer and Foster Coordinator supports the Volunteer and Foster program at Great Plains SPCA by performing administrative tasks related to recruiting, training, scheduling and providing assistance to volunteers and fosters.


Work Schedule (schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required): Sunday through Thursday. On call support will be two evenings each week.


  • In partnership with Manager, maintain correspondence and communication between volunteers and fosters, other organizations, and the public interested in the volunteer and foster program.
  • Lead, manage and recruit volunteers for events and shelter onsite support.
  • Collaborate with other departments within the shelter to ensure the success of the Volunteer and Foster program.
  • Meet regularly with other department to maintain excellent volunteer support is being provided.
  • Proactively communicate among the Volunteer and Foster team all current happenings in the department and provide coverage to each other.
  • Is an administrator on the Volunteer and Foster Facebook groups.
  • In partnership with Volunteer and Foster team, manage Foster and Volunteer email inboxes.
  • Business owner/administrator for volunteer management software.
  • Manage new volunteer mentor program.
  • Accurately track and record Volunteer and Foster hours.
  • Schedule and facilitate corporate and youth volunteer groups.


  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills included compassion and empathy for animal and human clients.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and computer software.
  • Ability to remain calm in a variety of high-stress situations.
  • Experience with handling dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferred.
  • Ability to administer vaccines and provide basic medical care and triage.
  • Experience with handling dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately.
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and training.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Lift 50lbs to waist height
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, stooping, carrying, and reaching as well as time sitting sedentary at a desk and computer.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, and high noise levels.
  • Work schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required.
