Great Plains SPCA is searching for a Volunteer and Foster Manager for the Merriam, Kansas location. Great Plains one of the largest shelters in the Kansas City metro area. We provided quality shelter care for nearly 4,000 animals yearly. We provide daily care, medical care, and enrichment for our shelter animals. We provide foster and forever home placements, pet behavior training services, and HERO Community Outreach.

The Volunteer and Foster Manager has overall responsibility for the success and performance of the Volunteer and Foster program at Great Plains SPCA. The Volunteer and Foster Manager builds a high performing team to recruit, train, develop, and build volunteer and foster support for Great Plains SPCA. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Work Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday. On call with Foster Support Phone three nights per week.

• Oversee, maintain, and continuously improve the Volunteer and Foster program, through open communication to encourage growth and efficiencies.
  
• Manage, coach and professionally develop the Volunteer and Foster team.
• Recruit and train new volunteers and fosters in collaboration with Behavior team.
• Perform foster home visits as needed.
• Handle volunteer and foster issues and conflicts as they arise.
  

• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills included compassion and empathy for animal and human clients.
  
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and computer software.
• Ability to remain calm in a variety of high-stress situations.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree, preferred.
• Previous Management experience, preferred.
• Experience with handling dogs and cats of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately.
• Knowledge of animal behavior and training.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

• Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 100lbs
• Lift 50lbs to waist height
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, stooping, carrying, and reaching as well as time sitting sedentary at a desk and computer.
  
• Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, and high noise levels.
• Work schedule and hours may vary; evenings and weekends may be required.
