Great Plains SPCA is looking for a Shelter Veterinarian for the Merriam, Kansas location. Great Plains one of the largest shelters in the Kansas City metro area. We provided quality shelter care for over 6,000 animals yearly.  We provide daily care, medical care, and enrichment for our shelter animals. We provide foster and forever home placements, pet behavior training services, and HERO Community Outreach.


The Shelter Veterinarian will provide first-class medical care to shelter animals that supports our mission to drive change in our community through innovative programs that promote adoption, outreach, and a better life for pets and the people that love them. The role includes a surgical and general care caseload, as well as critical emergencies.  The job offers a broad spectrum of animal care, procedures, and treatments in this fast-paced and rewarding environment.


  • Provide quality diagnostics and best-medicine to shelter pets and post-adoption appointments
  • Perform soft tissue surgical procedures
  • Provide superior customer service to our adopters through education, effective communication, and compassion
  • Communicate with fellow veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and animal care staff to ensure efficient and appropriate medical treatment
  • Participate in moving our mission forward


Education/License Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Kansas
  • Current, or eligible for, DEA license

Experience, Abilities and Qualifications

  • Advanced internal and external customer service skills
  • Ability to solve problems both medically and professionally
  • Demonstrate ability to work within a team
  • Willingness to coach and be coached about medical practices and procedures
  • Excellent time management and communication skills are key to this role 
  • Self-starter and an independent problem solver, with the desire to be a team contributor
  • Flexible and adaptable

Work Environment

This role requires standing for long periods of time, being able to physically manage large animals by lifting or safely restraining and manage fractious animals to keep employees and animals safe.  Rabies exposure is a potential, and employee is strongly recommended to be vaccinated. Work schedule and hours may vary; evenings and Sundays may be required for emergency situations. Operational flexibility is key to meet sudden and unpredictable needs.
