    United Way is seeking a high-level leader who believes solutions to complex social problems are possible when passionate and motivated Kansas Citians are united through transformative change. The Director of Education Initiatives will be the primary steward and organizer of investment resources, raised through United Way’s annual campaign and beyond. Through strategic grantmaking and collaborative community partnerships, this role will drive, develop and encourage United Way’s continued support and community impact.

     

    Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Chief Community Investment Officer, this position will work within the Community Impact department to proactively and creatively lead United Way’s Educational Initiatives.

     

    Community Collaboration:

    • Facilitate and maintain community collaborations and partnerships through intentional outreach, relationship development and shared operational and grantmaking goals; as well as convening neighboring Institutional leaders.
    • Determine collaborative development strategies using outcomes-focused metrics; i.e. proven success and progress.
    • Achieve goals related to grantmaking and community collaboration work through external stakeholders and philanthropic team members and UWGKC donors.
    • Establish leadership and implementation of a cross-sector, multi-partner initiative focused on reducing chronic educational absenteeism through;
      • Researching effective practices
      • Fostering relationships with area district leaders
      • Collaborating with UW partners
      • Providing public awareness and education through parent engagement campaigns
      • Creating agreements and mobilizing action
      • Developing/delivering resource efforts aimed at supporting this initiative.

    Grantmaking:

    • Provide leadership and direction for several Program Grants under United Way’s Community Impact Agenda, such as;
      • Staff, support and supervise volunteers and organizations involved in reviewing committees as well as facilitating proposal review and deliberation.
      •  Conduct post-grant award stewardship, progress report and outcome data review.
      • Provide technical assistance to grant-seeking organizations as needed.
    • Provide staff support to new and current partner agency certification review teams as needed.

    Relationship Management & Donor Engagement:

    • Serve as primary UWGKC contact, resource and ambassador with knowledge of grant recipient organizations and associated leaders.
    • Cultivate relationships with UWGKC Philanthropy team and key donors, nonprofit, governmental and other formal/informal groups who align with the community impact agenda, with respect to growing partnership, grantmaking and collaborative efforts.
    • Support organizational goals related to donor engagement, generating meaningful and engaging donor experiences that demonstrate United Way’s positive effort and effect.

    Operational Excellence:

    • Ensure effective and accurate achievement of departmental goals by demonstrating a positive, proactive and solutions-focused approach to fulfilling key responsibilities.
    • Maintain consistent internal/external communication related to grantmaking and community collaboration efforts. Create, manage and lead special events, as needed.
    • Regularly assess goal(s) progress, identifying what drives and impedes momentum. Help develop solutions to address gaps.
    • Contribute to building a positive, results-oriented, donor-centric culture that delivers upon UWGKC’s mission-driven strategic, operational and financial objectives.

    Annual Goals:

    • Achieve goals related to the successful operation of community collaboration work, including maximizing participation by community members, ensuring compliance with reporting and other requirements by nonprofit partners, and development of content related to United Way community impact storytelling and marketing efforts.
    • Work with other members of the UWGKC team to ensure goals reflect, align and contribute to the broader goals of the organization.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required; preferably Social Work, Education, Government/Public Policy or related health and/or human services field. Master’s degree preferred.
    • Five years + successful experience, preferably in the nonprofit, education or government sectors.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a strong reputation for integrity and professionalism, demonstrated intellectual curiosity, ability to resolve conflict constructively, strong performance management and evaluation capabilities; including the willingness and ability to ensure accountability.
    • Demonstrated leadership in relationship building and management.
    • The ability to think strategically and create commitment to foster an inclusive, accepting environment consistent with UWGKC’s focus on diversity and inclusion.
    • UWGKC is evolving with our changing external environment. Flexibility is a key attribute for this position. 
    • The ability to prepare, explain, and monitor performance; manage a diverse group of donors and volunteers, projects and workload, and engage constructively with the UWGKC team.
    • Proficient computer/CRM experience required.
    • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive data.

    Metrics of Success:

    • Develop and execute strategies to produce an increase in annual revenue and donors and donor retention in overall portfolio of accounts aligned with the established objectives of the organization.
    • Manage and lead direct reports to achieve these same objectives, with notice to staff satisfaction of adequate and motivating training and development.
    • Represent the UWGKC brand and mission with professionalism and passion to advance giving, engagement and brand value.
